Orlando City likely to add NWSL Women’s team

In an exciting twist to Orlando City soccer, it seems as if Orlando City are actively pursuing to bring an NWSL Women’s team to the City Beautiful.

Here at O-Towns 11, we will never create any false rumors, or attempt to deceive our readers. With that being said, we want to make it very clear that the Orlando City front office has made NO officials statements on any progress made in Orlando City’s attempts to add a women’s team.

However, last Saturday I asked Orlando City owner, Flavio Augusto Da Silva if OCSC was actively pursuing an NWSL expansion team. His response was quite interesting.

Flavio looked over to CEO Alex Leitao and asked if he could make a comment yet. Leitao chuckled and said no. The owner then looked back at me and said,“You are intelligent [enough to get why].”

It was one of those moments where an answer was given, without an answer being given.

An NWSL side would be unbelievable for the city of Orlando. With the addition of a new USL Pro side, plus an NWSL team all combined with our hugely successful MLS side, soccer will become the #1 sport in Central Florida.

With OCSC building a brand new stadium, it makes sense for the club to do what they can to utilize the stadium as much as possible. I personally believe that a women’s team will be very successful in Orlando, considering that OCSC is so fantastic at marketing.

Obviously we are way to early to start talking about players. However, I do believe Orlando City would bring in a big name to help market an inaugural season, whenever that may be. (hint hint: Marta or Cristiane)

It should also be mentioned that Orlando City is close to acquring Servando Carrasco from SKC. Carrasco happens to be married to US Soccer star, Alex Morgan.

Hopefully Orlando City will have an announcement for us shortly.
