It was a match that nearly wasn’t a shutout for Orlando City SC. Yet, the Lions surrendered a shutout to Nashville SC.
Orlando City SC rested just three notches up from the bottom in the MLS Eastern Conference. Their opponent, Nashville SC, fortified their spot at the top of the same conference after dealing the Lions a 5-0 shutout.
Orlando tried but could never find an offensive entry into the contest. The defense didn’t fare any better. Players on the purple team suffered critical failures of focus that culminated in a penalty goal.
Orlando defender Nolan Miller was caught pulling defender Jeisson Palacios’ jersey in the 26th minute, earning a yellow card in the penalty area. By the 28th minute, striker Sam Surridge banked the penalty and started collecting his hat trick.
While the Lions continue their struggle toward a second 2026 win in MLS, Nashville enjoys the bounty of success in 2026.
Cristian Espinoza started the rout in the 5th minute with a blast over Orlando goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau’s head. It hit the crossbar and caromed back into the net. He was assisted by Andy Najar and Edvar Tagseth.

Besides the three from Surridge, Warren Madrigal claimed the fifth score in the 80th minute. Espinosa and Palacios assisted in the Surridge score in the 67th minute.
With their lack of focus, there was no chance of drawing or winning the match. But two Lions players got chances to ruin the Nashville shutout.
After Espinoza’s opening score, just a few minutes later, Orlando forward Duncan McGuire caught a through ball and directed it toward the Nashville net. Goalkeeper Brian Schwake executed a brilliant save. Then in the 58th minute, winger Griffin Dorsey got a clear look at the net, but his shot hit the left post.
Orlando City players have fought to regain focus before. While strategy and execution are vital, focus lays the foundation on which Lions players can gain territory on the pitch to get goals and prevent giving them up.
Mental preparation must precede physical drills before Orlando City SC gets their next win.
