Ivan Angulo leads Orlando City SC in assists in all competitions after the team tied Minnesota United in their latest match.
Orlando City SC is struggling to kick off another winning streak. Minnesota United FC wouldn’t let them start it right away. But the Lions scraped out a point in stoppage time with a 3-3 draw.
It was Tyrese Spicer's stoppage-time goal that ensured Ivan Angulo got his 10th assist for the team across all competitions. That puts him just six away from former Captain Mauricio Pereyra’s single-season record.
When Daryl Dike opened up scoring in the 28th minute, it was his 21st goal for the team. That ties him with former teammate Tesho Akindele for 10th on the team’s all-time list.
Then in the 64th minute, Justin Ellis got a ball to Antoine Griezmann for a goal that put the Lions up 2-0. But the second-half hex hit the Lions again.
Minnesota goalkeeper Drake Callendar had to sub out with an injury. But that only seemed to drive the Minnesota Loons into a berserk state. In only four minutes, Minnesota scored, equalized, and then took the lead.
Marcus Caldeira scored with assists from Kelvin Yeboah and Kyle Duncan in the 71st minute. Just three minutes later, Joaquin Pereyra launched a corner kick that Anthony Markakich headed in for a 74th-minute equalizer.
To everyone’s amazement, Yeboah put Minnesota ahead just two minutes later.
The Loons played it like a numbers game. They erupted in chances and recorded 20 shots to Orlando’s microscopic six for the game. But the Lions had been watching and started looking for chances of their own.
Three minutes into final stoppage time, Griezmann grabbed a pass and launched a long ball along the left wing, which Spicer caught. He banked the shot while Griezmann shared an assist with Angulo.
The 3-3 draw isn’t a win. But it’s a point coming out of a wild struggle by both teams. They each won their points the hard way. Now if only Orlando City SC could beat that second-half hex once and for all.
