Orlando City selected Duke forward and Generation Adidas prospect Shakur Mohammed with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. The Lions aquired the pick after trading right back Ruan to DC United.
Mohammed, 19, is a Ghanian winger and midfielder who graduated from the Right to Dream program. At Duke, the forward scored 13 goals and provided nine assists in two seasons. This past college season, Mohammed finished as a semifinalist for the Hermann trophy, given to the most outstanding college player.
The Ghanaian was named ACC Player of the Season and a first-team All-American this season. He led the Blue Devils to the national quarterfinals where they fell to Creighton.
Mohammed is the Lions' first top three draft pick since selecting striker Santiago Patinho third overall in 2019, and the highest draft selection since taking Dike fifth overall in 2020. Orlando selected Larin 1st overall ahead of its inaugural season in the 2015 draft, the only other top two draft pick in club history.jj
