Well, the time has come. US Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has announced his 30-man preliminary World Cup roster, and among those left off, DC United forward Eddie Johnson is the most notable.
Johnson, who is actually from the same area of Florida that I live in, played with the US squad during the 2006 World Cup, and had a great year on the field for the USMNT in 2013, scoring five goals in 17 appearances. However, he has yet to find the back of the net with United this season, and his poor play lately is probably what has kept Klinsmann from choosing him.
The obvious names on the roster, though, include Landon Donovan, Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard.
Klinsmann’s 30-man squad with gather at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., on Wednesday for training, as Klinsmann will begin the process of evaluating his team and cutting the roster down to 23 players by the June 2 deadline.
The training camp will run until May 25, and then the team will take the field against Azerbaijan at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park on May 27 (10 pm ET, ESPN2/UniMas) as part of their World Cup send-off friendly series. The tour will also make a stops in New York to face Turkey on June 1, and EverBank Field in Jacksonville on June 7 (6pm, ESPN) for one last match in the State against Nigeria.
When the team gets to Brazil, it will play a closed-door friendly against fellow World Cup participants Belgium on June 12 in São Paulo.
Once the tournament actually starts, things will not be easy for the American’s, as they were pitted into the “Group of Death,” that also featured Ghana, Portugal and Germany, who are considered to be one of the best teams in the world.
